SEO Tip: Adding Meta Descriptions (Tags)

A meta description is a blurb of text that provides a brief description of a webpage. This text appears as a meta tag in a page’s HTML code.

Text from SEO meta descriptions also appears on search engine results pages (SERPs).

Why is the meta description important for SEO? Google explains:

A meta description tag should generally inform and interest users with a short, relevant summary of what a particular page is about. They are like a pitch that convinces users that the page is exactly what they’re looking for.

Please watch my video above for how to add meta descriptions to your page with WordPress.

Here are best practices for adding meta descriptions.

  • Write a unique description for each page.
  • Create something that encourages users to click (Get involved, Become a partner, etc.)
  • Summarize your mission statement on your homepage meta description.
  • Keep it under 155 characters
